Mayor and Council Overview
J. Johnson, Mayor
Christopher J. Johnson was elected as the Mayor of the City of Northville in November 1987. The Mayor serves as a liaison to the Historic District Commission, Downtown Development Authority, Conference of Western Wayne and as the SEMCOG Delegate. By statute, the Mayor also serves as the chairperson of the Downtown Development Authority. During the period of 1976 to 1987, prior to his tenure as Mayor, Chris Johnson served on the Northville Board of Education.
Aside from local government, Chris Johnson serves as a member of the Michigan Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Commission, the Local Lock-up Advisory Board, and is a member of Holy Family Parish.
Mayor Johnson was born in Berlin, Germany where his father was stationed during his service in the armed forces. Chris moved to the City of Northville in 1968 and graduated from Northville High School in 1973. Mayor Johnson is an Attorney, earning his B.G.S. from the University of Michigan in 1979 and his J.D. from Detroit College of Law in 1981. Chris Johnson is married to Patricia and they have a son, Karlek and a daughter, Tollie.
Allen, Mayor Pro Tem
Jim Allen was elected to City Council in November 2005. Prior to that, he was a Planning Commission member for 13 years. Jim also serves as the Planning Commission liaison, vice-chair of the Northville Parks and Recreation Commission and is chair of the Northville Liquor Licensing Review Committee.
Jim was born in Detroit, moved to Northville Township in 1974 and then, after college, to the City in 1992. He received his Bachelors of Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University in 1989. Jim is the president of Allen Design, a land planning company. He enjoys woodworking and snowboarding.
Elected to Northville City Council in November 2007, Nancy Darga has been a resident of Northville since 1995. Nancy has served on the Northville Parks and Recreation Commission for over 10 years, served on the Design Committee of the Northville Strategic Plan, and is a board member of the Northville Historical Society. She is a founding member of the Friends of the Rouge, and also serves on the Board of Directors for Motor City National Heritage Area. She is a licensed Landscape Architect, was previously Chief of Design for Wayne County Parks for 25 years before retiring in 2003, and is President of Fortunate Land Planning and Design. She is married to Michael Darga and has two children, daughter Anna and son Alex.
Sam Ekong, Council Member
Sam Ekong, elected to the City Council in November 2013, has been a resident of Northville since 2005. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering from the University of Washington, and a Master’s degree in Industrial/ Systems engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Sam has over 30 years of experience in Engineering and Management, and for the past seven years has been supporting the DOD as a contractor. He currently serves as the Council’s liaison to the Economic Development Corporation, the Housing Commission, and the Senior Advisory Council. He is also a published author and a licensed builder. He is married to Lavinia who is a clinical psychologist, and has one daughter. He enjoys travelling, reading, and meeting people.
Ryan A. McKindles, Council Member
Ryan McKindles was elected to City Council in November 2011. Ryan also serves as the Council’s liaison to the 35th District Court and serves on the Boards and Commissions Selection Committee and the Liquor License Review Committee. An attorney in private practice, Ryan is a partner at Nemes, Rooney & McKindles PC, where he specializes in real estate and business matters and serves as a boardmember with the Warrior Bar Association. He also owns a real estate company which is based in Northville. Ryan attended Michigan State University where he received his B.S. in 2000 and Wayne State University Law School, where he received his J.D. in 2004. He and his wife, Christa, have one son, Luke.
