Three children from area elementary schools were treated to lunch with firefighters at Northville Fire Station #1 on Oct. 24. They got a ride to the station in a fire truck that picked them up from school for this annual event.

The luncheon follows the Fire Prevention Open House held the previous week. At that time, kids entered their names in a drawing after their families completed a practice fire/emergency drill at their homes, trying two different ways to escape.

Winners of the drawing were Ava Dabaja, from Moraine Elementary School; Aidan Stover and Andrew Crain, of Amerman; and Reid Woloszyn, from Our Lady of Victory. Three of the winners (Andrew couldn’t attend) were joined at the fire house with their parents, Fire Chief Steve Ott, firefighters and emergency medical technicians. While the firefighters grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, the children made pillows that had a fire-station motif. They also toured the fire station.

All in all, it was a day to remember and helped the kids understand what goes into a firefighter’s job. “This was a great conclusion to a successful Fire Prevention Week program,” said Fire Chief Ott. “The students learned about the fire safety message and took it back to share with their families and classmates.”
