The Northville Skatepark Committee has been working hard to get a skatepark built in Northville to provide a recreational asset and place to socialize for youth and others. The effort was spearheaded by the family of Dominic Duhn – who was tragically hit by a car while skateboarding on Sheldon Road in 2020.
The project is gaining momentum in the community and already counts among its supporters: Northville Parks and Recreation, Northville Youth Network (NYN), the City of Northville, and Northville Public School District.
The Northville City Council approved a resolution at its June 21 meeting that supports a conceptual plan by the Northville Skate Park Committee to establish a skate park in Northville, either city or township. The resolution states the park would provide a healthy fitness and mental health activity for youth and also honor Dominic Duhn.
Recently, the Northville Public School District passed a resolution of support for the skatepark.
The fundraising goal is $500,000 to build a 10,000 ft.2 skatepark at Millennium Park. To date, $170,000 has been raised. While fundraising is going strong, more is needed.
The Northville Township Board of Trustees will hold a special study session on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at Township Hall to consider this project, along with a request for $150,000 in financial support.
Public attendance is encouraged by the committee. However, if you support a new skatepark but can’t attend the study session, send a letter or
email with your comments to the Township Clerk’s office prior to the meeting. Not all skateboards are youth, but most started the sport at a young age. For many, the sport has taken them to competitions and helped them excel in academic and professional pursuits. Just look at Tony Hawk’s skateboarding fame.
