To register to vote:

  • You must be a citizen of the United States
  • You must be a resident of the State of Michigan and at least a 30-day resident of the city in which you are registering by Election Day
  • You must be 18 years of age or older by Election Day

Voter registrations are accepted at the City Clerk's Office during regular business hours, any Secretary of State Branch Office, the Oakland and Wayne County Clerk's Office, designated state agencies such as Family Independence Agencies or military branch offices, as well as by mail, until 15 days before each election. During the 14 days prior to each election, voters will need to register to vote in person with the City Clerk's Office and provide proof of residency (see below).

You can update your voter registration address at any Secretary of State Branch Office, in person at the City Clerk's Office, or using one of the methods below: 

Residency verification documents within 14 days of an election

In order to register to vote within 14 days of an election and be eligible to vote in that election, voters must show residency verification documentation in the form of one of the following categories of documents (paper or electronic copies are acceptable):

  • Michigan driver’s license or State ID card
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck or government check
  • Other government document

With the exception of a driver’s license or State ID Card, these are broad categories of documents referring to residential, financial, or state institutions. Although it is not possible to make a complete list of all documents that would qualify, below are examples of documents that fit into these categories:

  • Bank, financial institution, credit card or debit card bill or account statement
  • Any document issued by a Michigan high school, college or university
  • Gas, electric, water, trash disposal, internet, phone, mortgage, lease, rental, or insurance bill or policy
  • Pay stub or earnings statement
  • Any documents from any federal, state, county, or local government unit, including receipts, licenses or assessments, and vehicle title and registration

Any time up to 15 days before each election:

Is there a photo ID requirement if I register to vote in person?

When registering to vote in person, you will need to present acceptable photo id or sign an affidavit if you are not in possession of photo id. 

I am submitting my voter registration application via mail. Do I need to provide anything?

If you have never registered to vote in Michigan and choose to mail in your application, you will need to verify your identity by including the following:

  • Your Michigan driver's license or state ID number where requested on the form, OR
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security number where requested on the form, OR
  • Send a copy (not an original document) of ONE of the following forms of identification with your application:
    • A photocopy of your Michigan driver's license or state ID, OR
    • A photocopy of a paycheck stub, utility bill, bank document or government document that lists both your name and your address.


What are the voter registration deadlines for the next election?

15 or more days prior to Election Day
Last day to register in any manner other than in-person with the local City Clerk's Office. Residency verification is not required.

14 days prior to and up to 8 pm Election Day
A person may register to vote in-person at their local City Clerk’s Office with proof of residency. Those registering to vote during this time are eligible for an Absent Voter Ballot.  Consider registering to vote before Election Day to avoid delays on Election day.

Acceptable residency documents include:

  • Driver's license
  • State ID card
  • US Passport
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check
  • Other government document

Documents must have name and current address.  Digital copies are acceptable. 


How do I verify if I am registered to vote and find my polling place?

How do I change my name on my voter registration?

Does my voter registration address need match the address on my Michigan drivers license?

Michigan law requires the same address be used for voter registration and driver license purposes.

If the residence address provided on the voter registration form is different from the address shown on your Michigan driver license or personal identification card, the Secretary of State will automatically change that address to match your voter registration residence address .

If an address change is made, the Secretary of State will mail an address update sticker for your driver license or personal identification card.

I moved. Do I have to update my voter registration?
If you move to a new city or township, you must re-register to vote.  

If you move within the same city or township and are already registered to vote, you only need to update your address with the city/township clerk.
