Planning Commission reviews density
Posted on 08/28/2019
New way to measure home density being explored. At its Aug. 6 meeting, planning commissioners discussed Floor Area Ratio (FAR), a calculation used in planning to regulate building size. It is derived by taking the square footage of a house, including all stories, and dividing it by the lot size. The Planning Commission wants to use this tool to reduce the size of new homes. The City’s planning consultant, Carlisle Wortman and Associates, was directed to compare how various FAR requirements would impact different sized lots (R-1B zoning district only); show how another local community implemented similar FAR requirements for new homes; and draft FAR ordinance language.
