Police will be monitoring Ford Field more frequently to ensure that dog owners are following the ordinance for keeping dogs on leash. When dogs run off leash, it may cause dogs on leashes to react aggressively when approached by a dog running loose. Also, adults and children may be afraid of dogs not on leashes that come close to them or run toward them.
Section 10-2 of the City Ordinance states, in part, that “no person owning, possessing or harboring any dog shall permit the dog at any time to be in a public park except when held securely in leash or by leash of suitable strength and length by the owner or other person capable of restraining the actions of the dog.”
Any person violating this section of the ordinance shall be responsible for a municipal civil infraction punishable by a civil fine of not more than $500 and the cost of prosecution.
Dog owners who want their dogs to run off leash can register for one or two dog parks operated by Northville Parks and Recreation Dept. The Cady Street Dog Park – located behind the Northville Art House – is .7 acres and the Marv Gans Community Park – at Beck Road, north of Six Mile – is four acres. See more on their
website.
