The Historic District Commission reviews applications for proposed changes to the exterior of buildings, and changes to the site and landscape of property in the Historic District.

Meeting Dates and Submission Deadlines
General Information
  • The HDC meets on the third Wednesday of the month.  Public welcome to attend.
  • Meeting dates and application deadlines may be moved to accommodate holidays. Follow the posted schedule.
  • Applications are due by 4 p.m. on the submission deadline.
  • Submission deadlines are firm. Applications received after the deadline are placed on the following month's meeting agenda. 

Note: The submission deadline does not ensure the case will be heard at the next meeting. The city planner will review your application, supporting documentation, and determine if it is complete. Deficient applications are deferred to the next meeting pending timely submission of the required information.

Meeting Information
All meetings begin at 7pm unless otherwise noted.  

Meetings are held at City Hall - Council Chambers, 215 W. Main Street, Northville, Michigan, 48167, 248-449-9902, unless otherwise noted.

Who Should Apply?
Owners, residents, contractors, and tenants considering alterations to the exterior of a building, or changes to the site or landscape of any property in a historic district.   

Not all changes require Historic District Commission review. Contact the Building Department at 248-449-9902 or email for more information
Changes and Projects that Require Historic District Commission Review

Changes requiring Historic District Commission review include:  

  • Changing paint colors

  • Roof and shingle replacement

  • Installing new or replacement windows

  • Installing new storm or security doors, or new storm windows

  • Installing new doors, garage doors, or security doors

  • Reconstructing areas of masonry walls, chimneys, floors, porches,
    etc

  • Reconstructing all or part of a porch

  • Constructing a new building, structure, or addition

  • Removing large trees, shrubbery, plantings

  • Installing new or replacement fencing

  • Installing or replacing signage, including awnings

  • Demolishing or moving a building.  You must also submit the  Demolition and Moving of Buildings Application in conjunction with the Historic District Application.

Demolition or Moving of Buildings

If your project includes moving or demolition of a building or structure, you must submit a Demolition-Moving Application in conjunction with the Historic District Commission Application.

Application Submission Requirements
  • Review the application submission schedule before applying.  Submission deadlines are firm.
  • Follow the submission instructions found in the application. The instructions provide direction on the number of packets needed, how to assemble your submission, and the documents required for your type of project.
  • If your project includes moving or demolition of a building or structure, you must submit the Historic District Application in conjunction with the Demolition and Moving of Buildings Application.
  • Incomplete applications may be deferred to a future meeting.
  • Applicable fees are noted on the application. Applications filed without the fee are considered incomplete.
Application Review
Applications are reviewed by the City Planner to determine if they are complete. 

Incomplete applications may be deferred to a future Historic District Commission meeting based upon when necessary information is received. 

The City Planner's review is emailed to the applicant prior to the scheduled meeting. Any required additional information will be outlined in the review. Follow the directions in the review for submitting additional information.  All additional information must be submitted in identical packets.  

The Historic District Commission may refer the application back to the applicant if additional information is not provided as requested.
