Historic District Commission

Purpose and Composition

The Historic District Commission reviews exterior and architectural changes to structures within the Historic District.  It regulates the construction, addition, alteration, repair, moving, excavation, and demolitions of resources in the Historic District.   

Members serve three-year terms and are appointed by the Mayor.  Membership includes the Mayor or an alternate selected by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council, and six city residents.  At least two members must be residents within the historic district, and one member shall be an architect.  The building inspector or that person's designee shall serve on the HDC as a resources person and shall not count toward the total of seven members.  A majority of the HDC members shall have clearly demonstrated interest in or knowledge of historic preservation.  For more information about the HDC, contact the Building Department at 248-449-9902.
